Reclaiming The Stolen Scream

On February 17th 2006, Noam Galai took a picture of himself screaming. He posted it to his Flickr account and called his self-portrait, “Screaming for Help.” People liked it. They really liked it. Some were inspired. Inspired enough to steal it.

Considered one of the most stolen images of all time, acclaimed photographer Noam Galai's Stolen Scream has been found all over the world since 2006 with famous people, in anonymous street art, during historic protests and revolutions, on playbills, books and magazine covers, in galleries and many other commercial for-profit enterprises. In all of these case, Noam, the Creator and Character of his self portrait was never recognized or rewarded. And, the provenance of his creation or these co-creations could never before be authenticated, secured or easily managed. Until now!

Leveraging the power of Keevo's next gen NFT wallet and NgraphT's digital identity platform, Noam is reclaiming his likeness and original artwork with a collection of 500 unique and valuable 1:1 NFTs. Included in this collection are 25 Noam originals, 250 unique pieces by nearly 40 partner co-creators, 100 community creations from another 40-50 contestants in an art competition we ran and 125 reclaimed stolen screams from the last 16 plus years.

This project and our roadmap gives Creators, Co-Creators and Characters full recognition, fair reward and simple and secure control over their work and likeness.

Come join our movement to reclaim the Stolen Scream and own a piece of history!

The Story

After many thousands of versions have been found all around the world, it's now known as “the Stolen Scream.” It is considered one of the most stolen photographs of all time.

Today, leveraging the power of blockchain and NgraphT's new digital identity platform, Noam is reclaiming his likeness and original artwork with a unique NFT collection.

Almost immediately after posting his original self portrait and ever since, Noam has found images, instances and derivations of his original Scream self portrait all around the world. He's found himself on hundreds of things and in thousands of places including tee-shirts, books, magazines and other products. He's found his image in a variety of publications and promoting a multitude of events including concerts, plays and protests.

In addition to commercial applications which can be tied back to individual people and companies, Noam's Stolen Scream has also popped up in thousands of pictures by anonymous graffiti artists, web posts and memes. And, his image has appeared in some of the most iconic protests and periods of social unrest in recent history including his home town of New York City, but also in Iran during the Green Revolution, in Egypt, Gaza and other countries during the Arab Spring, in Iraq and at protests in Venezuela, Honduras, Argentina, Spain and China just to name a few.

All of these uses of Noam's likeness and original images were without his consent, without any recognition or accreditation and (while the least important in some respects) without any monetary reward. In fact, the “Stolen Scream” is one of the best examples of the total lack of control, recognition or reward which plagues Creators of digital media today. Noam's very own face was essentially for sale. And, it was being used, distributed, and sold without his consent. When Noam realized this wasn't just a “one-time-thing”, he decided to start collecting, cataloging and photographing copies of each instance he found of his Stolen Scream.
